Is volunteering harder than the shift they offered to work?
People who wanted to help for two hours will not fill out a job application first.
A lot of volunteer pages were built like hiring pages: resume, references, availability, background check, and a vague “we will be in touch.” The person who had Saturday morning free closes the tab. You still need help. They still wanted to give it.
Split the one-time shift from the long-term role
Keep the deeper screening for people who will handle keys, money, or kids. Everyone else needs a date, a place, a task, and a name to text.
Name the actual jobs. “Volunteer with us” is not a job. “Pack boxes Saturday 9–11” is.
- One named shift with a time, a location, and what to wear.
- Name, email or text, and any hard limit (age, lifting, driving).
- A confirmation that includes who to find when they arrive.
Save the long form for the second visit
If a waiver or background check is required, say so up front and keep it after they pick a shift—not as the only door in.
The goal is a first yes they can finish on a phone in the parking lot. The paperwork can wait until you know they are coming.
